PROGETTO “Make up your Mind”, ERASMUS+ Elisabetta Cocco, 27 anni Portogallo
“Ready to go” or “Immediate departure”: these are two of the potential sentences you can read on the description of the SVE projects. Personally, I believe they are also representatives of states of mind. I was at a standoff in my life: I was done with the Master Degree, I got my Professional Habilitation after one year of internship and an exam of three months. I found myself unemployed for months and living in a city where I wasn’t feeling at home. I applied to different projects during those months, but none of them as coherent to my field of studies as this one for which I am here now. Psycological, pedagogical and educational activities with children, as well as community activities with other partner associations, entities, institutions etc. The welcoming from behalf of SPIN, the coordinating association, has been essential, even while I was still in my home country. In fact, they even found an accomodation for me, so that I didn’t even have to search for it. I feel very encouraged by the fact that other volunteers work in the association, but also in my receiving organization I feel like in a family, considering that all my collegues are older women (in the picture, cakes that a collegue baked for Easter lunch in the crèche). Another factor that gives me security is the community integration and wellbeing promotion that are developed in the neighborhood in which these associations are. In the picture, one of the hundreds streetart works of the neighborhood. Thanks to these artists, between many other actors, the social houses were made beautiful and well-finished. On my arrival, togheter with other voluteeres, we have been guided in a visit through the neighborhood. Beside it, it has been very interesting another guided visit, held by the president of the receiving institution. She showed us some blind sides, weaknesses, lacks and still developing projects in the area, such as the improving of living conditions inside the social houses and the relationships between different ethnies. Spin is one of those associations who, bringing volunteers from all over Europe to such a periferical social houses quarter, thinks globally and acts locally. I had the chance to partecipate in the 10th anniversary of SPIN and other two parties with the others volunteers. This allowed me to feel part of something, beside having fun, of course! Beyond the Easter lunch, we had a birthday party and the father’s day party in the crèche. I took part in a education workshop for parents and, as march was the month of the book, in a reading activity with partner associations. Last, but not least, last week I started, together with the president of the receiving association and others partner associations, a training course about peace. So much happened in my first month! I can’t wait for more!
I am writing from the bus going to my On-Arrival Training in Viseu. I decided to resume my second month of EVS before this experience because I was told this would have been so relevant to deserve exclusive attention. On April I had the opportunity to take part of a meeting between my hosting organization and other associations and enthities, with the goal of organizing the “Day of the neighbor”. It will be a food, music and sports event for the integration of the different realities of the neighborhood of social houses supported by my hosting organization. Our language course turned into a literature club once per month. Every volunteer shares the resume of the story he/she read the week before. These meetings happen in a solidal library in the same neighborhood. The book where donated to the library and they are now sold for a “social price”. Once per week I participated in the program of education for peace of Prem Rawat Fundation, in which I could watch the videos of some conferences of the lecturer and discuss with other participants, such as other associations of the neighborhood, about topics as Peace, Thankfulness, Interior strenght, Self Knowledge, Clarity, Comprehension, Dignity, Capacity of Choice, Hope, Contentment. Within PULSAR and BIP/ZIP projects I could visit the neighbors supported by my hosting organization, in order to gather the opinions and complaints of the habitants of the social houses. The role of the association is then mediate between the families and the company who manage the buildings. One of the activities that makes me feel always safe is the meeting with the tutor, both in the hosting (the director of the association and the educational actitities coordinator) and in the coordinating association. I am also lucky to share the apartment with my mentor, with whom we organize dinners between housemates at least once per month (my other house mate is a European Volunteer too). These meetings help me feeling welcomed and belonging. Once per month for three months I had (and still will have) the chance to partecipate in the events organized by the Culture Boutique: “Histories around”. The first session took place in an association that promotes social integration through radical sports; the second one, in the art incubator, a place where everyone can share his/her art; the third one will take place in the creche together with the parents of the children. The goal of this event is to share short stories about different topics: women, freedom, interculturality. In the creche I was given the chance to teach colors in english to the children. They learn new topics every month, and in may they will learn transports names. We also celebrated father’s day on march and mother’s day on may. The children sung songs and acted a scene and we had snacks in the afternoon together with the parents. The Coordinating Organization also organized a mini party for all the new volunteers and we could taste the typical cherry liquor from Lisbon: ginjinha. When I wrote my first article I thought it was too full, but after this second month, I don’t really know what to expect from may and the next months!
